The lesson

The flare isn’t a single pull.

Flare Trainer is a browser-based landing trainer that starts you on short final at 200 ft AGL and puts the entire flare in your hands: pitch, roll, rudder, and throttle, all flown manually from a fixed cockpit view.

Most student pilots apply back pressure at the start of the flare and then stop. The nose already came up, so it feels like the job is done. But as airspeed decays, the same back pressure can no longer hold the attitude, and the nose drops.

Flare Trainer is built around this one lesson. The flight model reproduces it faithfully, so you learn to keep adding back pressure all the way to touchdown. You also learn to read the cue that tells you when: the gap between the cowling and the horizon growing steadily thinner.

Aircraft

Seven aircraft. Seven flares.

Each aircraft has its own Vref, flare height, tail-strike pitch, engine response, and handling. You can fly from the left or right seat.

What you’ll see and hear

Short final, as it really looks.

A realistic 3D world

Volumetric-style skies, sun-driven shadows (including your own aircraft’s shadow on the runway), terrain, towns, a fully marked runway, PAPI, and airport buildings.

Time of day and weather

Sunrise, day, sunset, or night. Rain or snow at light, moderate, or severe intensity. VFR or MVFR visibility.

SunriseDaySunsetNightVFR · MVFR

Airport lighting

Sequenced approach lights, runway centerline and edge lights, and taxiway lighting. They come on at night, at dawn and dusk, and in MVFR.

Wind

Headwind, crosswind, and gusts. A warning appears when your setting exceeds the aircraft’s maximum demonstrated crosswind.

Sound

Engine sound that follows the throttle, piston or jet. Tire screech scaled to your touchdown G. Radio-altitude callouts, a stall warning, and an autopilot-disconnect alert on your first input.

Visible propellers

They blur as power increases.

Instruments and practice aids

Help when you want it. Gone when you don’t.

Bank angle indicator

PFD-style for the jets, steam-gauge style for the pistons.

PFD-style wind arrow

With headwind and crosswind components.

Crosshair & Practice Mode

An optional crosshair, and a Practice Mode with flight-director-style guidance showing exactly where the nose should be right now.

The debrief

Every landing ends with a flight test report.

Touchdown sink rate and G, pitch, speed, touchdown point, centerline deviation, residual crab and drift, plus a graph of your height, pitch, and back pressure through the flare, with every moment the nose dropped highlighted.

Written coaching from a CFI’s perspective

  • 01Where you stopped adding back pressure
  • 02Flaring too high or too low, and ballooning
  • 03Late throttle reduction
  • 04An approach speed too close to the stall
  • 05Stall warnings
  • 06Overcontrolling in pitch or roll
A real flight test report: sink rate, touchdown pitch, speed and point, centerline, crab, drift, flare start, and the flare record graph
Real reportA hard landing in a heavy jet. The graph shows the back pressure arriving only at the last moment.
